Job Description
Westaff is seeking a Paralegal/Legal Administrative Assistant for a state office in Helena, MT!! Schedule: Full Time Pay: $24/hr Term: 1-3 months+ Duties: Research and Coordination • Obtains and/or develops witness statements and evidence to evaluate the merits of matters. • Identifies and locates expert and lay witnesses to provide essential and convincing testimony to establish facts. • Interviews and prepares witnesses for hearing. • Obtains documents and other relevant information from courts or opposing counsel. • Researches statutory and case laws and summarizes results to assist attorneys. • Ensures deadlines and statute of limitations are accurately tracked and requests extensions. • Provides assistance to the attorneys to facilitate the preparation and presentation of cases in judicial and administrative venues. • Manages administrative cases. Legal Documentation • Prepares legal correspondence and pleadings, motions, briefs and other legal documents for attorney review. • Proofreads legal documents for accuracy, citation format, and compliance with Rules of Civil Procedure. • Recommends report formats such as flow charts and tables to be used in exhibits. • Recommends and develops legal templates as necessary. Other Duties as Assigned • Perform special assignments as determined by the OLA management team. Minimum Qualifications: • Background check required • Associates degree in paralegal studies from an accredited institution or • Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university; or • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university and completion of no less than 18 semester credits of course work offered by a qualified paralegal studies program; or • Certification by the national association of legal assistants or the National Federation of Paralegal Associations; or • Has received a high school diploma or its equivalent and has performed not less than 4,800 hours of substantive legal work under the supervision of a licensed lawyer documented by the certification of the lawyer or lawyers under whom the work was done and has completed at least five hours of approved continuing legal education in the area of legal ethics and professional responsibility; or • Has graduated from an accredited law school and has not been disbarred or suspended from the practice of law by any jurisdiction. Required for the first day of work: • Knowledge of legal procedures. • Knowledge of administrative law and litigation process including court procedures. • Knowledge of legal formatting requirements in various courts and other jurisdictions. • Ability to conduct research and investigate facts. • Ability to navigate State and Federal court systems. • Acute attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills. • Ability to work independently and within a team environment. • Ability to operate personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using spreadsheets, word processing, database, email, internet, and other computer programs.
